How to Join Merchant Navy / Guideline for all courses
There are following courses to join Merchant navy ship as per below details of courses
1 G P Rating – Duration 6 Months
The General Purpose (GP) Rating Course was introduced on request from the Shipping Industry, in order to ensure enhanced & multiple utility of ratings, on board vessels belonging to shipping companies, worldwide. Accordingly, the erstwhile Deck Rating and Engine Rating courses were adapted to the new guidelines and concept of "General Purpose Rating" was introduced by the Directorate. This ensured higher employ-ability of the Indian seafarers in world market.
Academic Qualification: Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 10th Standard from a recognized Board with Science, Mathematics as subjects and with minimum 40% marks in English language either in 10th, 12th or diploma / degree exam.
Maximum Age limit: Between 17.5 to 25 years.
2. Course Name: Pre-Sea Course for General Purpose Rating for Fitters/Petty Officers. Course Duration: 6 Months
Minimum Academic Qualification: Pass in 2-Year I.T.I. course from Govt. Approved Institute with minimum 50% aggregate marks in final year and minimum 40% marks in English at 10th or 12th or diploma / degree exam.
Maximum Age limit: Between 17.5 to 25 years.
Medical Fitness: Candidate for admission to marine courses (DG, Shipping-approved courses) are required to produce certificate for medical fitness by authorities authorized by Director General of Shipping.
Eyesight: Candidate’s vision should be 6/6 (normal) in each eye separately, medically fit including eye sight and hearing as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended.
3. Saloon Rating (Certificate Course in Maritime Catering) - 6 month course
Saloon Rating Course was introduced on request from the Shipping Industry, in order to ensure enhanced & multiple utility of ratings, on board vessels belonging to shipping companies, worldwide. Accordingly, the erstwhile Deck Rating and Engine Rating courses were adapted to the new guidelines and concept of "Saloon Rating" was introduced by the Directorate of shipping
Eligibility Criteria:
Age – Between 17.5 to 25 years
Qualification – Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 12th standard from any stream, from a recognized Board with English as a subject. The candidate to obtain at least 40% mark.
Medical – medically fit including eye sight and hearing as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended.
4. Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS)
The one Year DNS Course is a course leading to B.Sc., Nautical Science after 18 months of sea service and also leading to 2nd Mate Foreign going Certificate of competency awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, enabling the cadets to become Navigating officers on board Merchant Naval Ships anywhere in the world. The one year Diploma in Nautical Science Course is strictly residential.
Course Duration: 1 year
Age Limit: Maximum 25 years
Physical Standards: Medically fit as per the standards set by M.S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.
Academic Qualification: Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% and with 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th std exam.
Eyesight: Candidates have to qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from color blindness (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended
Career Progression:
Phase 1: 1-year dns course at Academy.
Phase 2: 18 Month Sea training at ship.
Phase 3: Appear for 2nd mate exams + BSc.
Phase 4: Join as a 3rd officer and get promoted to 2nd office
5 B.Sc. Nautical Science- 3 years
The Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. Leading to Second Mate’s Foreign-Going Certificate of Competency awarded by the D.G. Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, and Government of India after twelve months of Sea Service. This enables the cadets to become Navigating Officers on board Merchant Navy Ships worldwide.
1. Name of Course: One year Pre-Sea Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc Nautical Science affiliated to Indian Maritime University.
[After completing one year diploma + 18 months onboard training + 4 months preparatory course + requisite modular courses, can appear for written and oral exam of Second Mate Certificate of Competency].
Minimum Academic Qualification: (a ) Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%
OR
(b ) B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year.
OR
(c ) B.E./B. Tech. Degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE with an average of not less than 50% of marks in the final year. The candidates should have obtained 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th Std or in the Degree course conducted by recognized Board or any University.
Note: Selection of the candidates and their admissions will be through Combined Entrance Test conducted by Indian Maritime University The details and the forms can be seen on the Web site : www.imu.edu.in. Two batches are conducted in a year commencing on February and August every year.

6. Name of Course: 3-Year B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science.
[After completing three years degree + 12 months onboard training + 4 months preparatory course + requisite modular courses, can appear for oral exam of Second Mate Certificate of Competency].
Minimum Academic Qualification: Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% and with 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th std exam.
Maximum Age limit: 25 years
7. Name of Course: 4 Years B.S. [Nautical Technology]
Minimum Academic Qualification: Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% and with 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th std exam.
Maximum Age limit : 25 years
Medical Fitness: Candidate for admission to marine courses (DG, Shipping-approved courses) are required to produce certificate for medical fitness by authorities authorized by Director General of Shipping.
Eyesight: Candidates joining B.Sc. (Nautical Science) & B.Sc. (Maritime Science) degree course are not allowed to wear glasses and their vision should be 6/6 (normal) in each eye separately.
In case of candidates joining B. Tech. (Marine Engineering) degree course, glasses may be allowed but eye sight in each eye beyond plus/minus 2.5 will be rejected. Unaided vision should be 6/12 in both eyes minimum or 6/9 in the good eye and 6/12 in the other eye minimum.
B.E. Marine Engineering
8. 4 years Degree Course in Marine Engineering.
The Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. Leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency awarded by the D.G. Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, and Government of India
after six months of Sea Service. This enables the cadets to become Marine Engineer board Merchant Navy Ships worldwide.
Minimum Academic Qualification: (a) Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%.
OR
(b) Candidate can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course provided he has passed 1st year training from the Alternate Training Scheme, approved by D.G. Shipping (This will not be applicable to MERI.)
OR
(c ) Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 1st year from the Engineering College in other streams like Mechanical or Electrical approved by AICTE with minimum 60% average marks.
OR
(d ) Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 3 years Diploma Course in Mechanical / Marine / Electrical / Electrical and Electronics, from the colleges approved by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% of aggregate marks in the last year of Diploma Course.
OR
(e) Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 3 years Diploma Course, in addition to the three years regular Diploma Course in Mechanical/ Electrical /Electrical & Electronics Engineering, in following categories, from the colleges approved by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% of aggregate marks in the last year of Diploma Course ;- Electrical Engineering Stream : Electrical Power System Electrical and Electronics Engineering Stream : Digital Electronics / Electronics and Communications/ Electronics & Telecommunication / Industrial electronics / Electronics / Electronics Production & Maintenance / Instrumentation /Instrumentation & Control Mechanical Engineering Stream : Automobile /Machine Tools and Maintenance /Plant Engineering / Production Technology /Production Engineering /Advanced Diploma in Tool and Die Making
[Note : The candidates in this category are not eligible for exemption in the examination of Applied Mechanics and Heat Engine subject of Part ‘A’ MEO Class IV and Class II of Certificate of Competency Examinations.]
OR
(f) A candidate can join 2nd year of 4 Year’s Marine Engineering Degree course who have passed 4 years Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering from the colleges approved by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% aggregate marks in the last year of diploma course.
AND
The candidates should have obtained with minimum of 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th Std or in the Degree / Diploma course conducted by recognized Board or University.
NOTE : Part Time or Distance Learning or Correspondence Course or any combination of these will not be considered .
Maximum Age Limit: 25 Years.
Medical Fitness:
In case of candidates joining B. Tech. (Marine Engineering) degree course, glasses may be allowed but eye sight in each eye beyond plus/minus 2.5 will be rejected. Unaided vision should be 6/12 in both eyes minimum or 6/9 in the good eye and 6/12 in the other eye minimum.

9. Name of Course: Marine Engineering Course for Graduates- 1 Year
Minimum Academic Qualification: (a) Graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
OR
(b) The candidates holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Automation Engineering after attending a course of 4 years duration from an UGC recognized university and or approved by AICTE, with a minimum mark of 50% in the final year, and a minimum 50% marks in English language at the 10th or 12th standard or in degree examination. These candidates will not get full exemption from MEO Class IV and MEO Class II Certificate of Competency Exam but require to appear and pass the “Heat Engines” written paper of MEO Class IV Part ‘A’ CoC Exam and “Thermodynamics & Heat Transmission” written paper of MEO Class II Part ‘A’ CoC Exam.
Maximum Age Limit: 28 Years.
10. Name of Course: Marine Engineering Course for Diploma Holders- 2 years
Minimum Academic Qualification: (a) Pass Diploma in Mechanical /Marine/ Naval Architecture / Electrical / Electrical and Electronics Engineering with minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum of 50% marks in English language at 10th, 12th std or Diploma exam.
(b) Passed Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering with minimum marks of 50% in final year (4-year course) and with minimum of 50% marks in English language at 10th, 12th std or Diploma exam.
Maximum Age Limit: 28 Years.
11.B.E Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering- 4 years
This course is formulated to obtain expertise in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering so that on completion of the degree, the candidates are eligible to occupy Engineer/managerial positions in various Government and private Shipyards, Ship Design offices, Boatyards, Classification Societies, and Offshore companies within India and abroad.
Course Duration: 4 years or 8 semesters
Education Qualification: A pass in Plus-Two (12th Standard) or its equivalent, with minimum 50% aggregate in Maths, Physics and Chemistry group and 55% marks in English from recognized Board.
Age: Below 25 years at the time of commencement of the course.
Gender: Both Male and Female candidates are eligible to apply
Mode of Selection: Admission test / Personal interview / JEE/AIEEE students will be given preference.
Lateral Entry (Lateral Entry Subject to availability)
Eligibility: The candidates with a) Diploma in Mechanical, Civil, Marine and Naval Architecture or b) Engineering students (BE/BTech Mechanical, Civil, Marine and Naval Architecture) who have successfully completed first year or c) BSc candidates in Math’s and Physics with 60% marks are eligible for admission in Second year. Good communication and Writing skills in English is a must.
Mode of Selection: Admission test / Personal interview
This is a one-year conversion course for Mechanical Engineering / Naval Architecture graduates to become Marine Engineers and is approved by Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Govt. of India. After successfully completing the TAR Book competency examinations held at Maritime Collage/University, the candidate will be eligible to obtain exemption for PART A of MEO Class IV competency certificate.
Qualification – (a) Graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
(b) The candidates holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Automation Engineering after attending a course of 4 years duration from an UGC recognized university and or approved by AICTE, with a minimum marks of 50% in the final year, and a minimum 50% marks in English language at the 10th or
12th standard or in degree examination. Merchant ships [Duration: 17 weeks] For certification as Electro Technical Officer, 6 months onboard Training is mandatory.
Electrical Officers are responsible for monitoring all electronic and electrical equipment onboard to maximize the operational safety and efficiency of the vessel. As an electrical officer, you'll work in close association with deck and engineering officers for all electrical and hydraulic technology and machinery related challenges. You'll be responsible for power generation and distribution systems and for other equipment such as lifts, reefers and electrical bus systems.
i) Passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with minimum 50 % marks in English Language at 10th of 12the standard exam.
ii) Passed three years’ Diploma with 60% marks or four year’s Degree including lateral entry, with 50% marks in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication / Communication Engineering, or Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent.
iii) The diploma /degree courses must have been recognized by any State or Central Government or the AICTE.
iv) Candidates who were admitted in Diploma course on the basis of Matriculation only and went to complete their B.E./ B. Tech degree course as a lateral entry in the 2nd year of the degree on the basis of Diploma, and has secured the degree in the disciplines mentioned at (II) of the above, are also permitted to be admitted in the ETO course.
Qualification – 10+2 with PCM from a recognized Education Board & minimum 50% marks in English in 10th/12th and Diploma in (EE/ ECE/ EEE/EIE) with 60% or B-Tech in (EE/ ECE/ EEE/EIE) with 55%.

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University, which has campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Kochi. Several colleges are also affiliated with it. To get admission in the IMU campuses and affiliated colleges one needs to crack the IMU- Common Entrance Test. BTIM is a pioneer in IMU-CET Coaching. We also provide study material, opportunities to sit for mock tests, sponsorship classes and more for IMU aspirants.
Ministry of Shipping, and these were subsumed under the Indian Maritime University in November 2008. The 3 institutes in Mumbai, namely, the Training Ship Chanakya, the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, and the Marine Engineering Research Institute became the Mumbai Campus of the Indian Maritime University. The 2 institutes in Kolkata, namely, the Marine Engineering Research Institute and the Indian Institute of Port Management became the Kolkata Campus of the University. The National Ship Design and Research Centre in Visakhapatnam and the National Maritime Academy in Chennai became the Visakhapatnam and Chennai Campuses respectively of the University. Post November 2008, Kochi Campus was set up - in 2009. The University also has 24 Affiliated Institutes.
